DURHAM, N.C. (UMNS) — Samuel Oliver-Bruno, who found sanctuary in a United Methodist church for nearly a year, has been deported to Mexico. But the congregation of CityWell United Methodist Church continues to support his family and hold out hope for his return. Heather Hahn reports.

Church steps up after Alaska earthquake
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (UMNS) — Alaska’s most powerful earthquake since 1964 caused major road and property damage. It also knocked out power and water at an Anchorage home for people who have struggled with chronic alcoholism and homelessness. St. John United Methodist Church became the 46 residents’ temporary shelter, with volunteers quickly rounding up cots and serving donated food. Sam Hodges reports.

Bishops explore war-torn region
BANGUI, Central Africa Republic (UMNS) — United Methodist church leaders were challenged to be intentional about making peace in conflict areas in Africa during a visit to Kenya and the Central Africa Republic, where The United Methodist Church has its newest mission stations. Bishops mourn death of President George H.W. Bush
WASHINGTON — The death of George H.W. Bush, the nation's 41st president, was mourned by the Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church in a letter to his son, 43rd President George W. Bush, and his wife, Laura. The elder Bush died on Nov. 30.

Committee seeks liturgical resources
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The liturgical resources subgroup of the Hymnal Revision Committee seeks the submission of new materials for possible inclusion in the next United Methodist Hymnal. The committee particularly seeks worship resources for baptism, confirmation, renewal of baptism and days and seasons of the church year. Resources are requested through June 30.
