Ministry offers seafarers home away from home
PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. (UM News) — Members of First United Methodist Church of Cocoa Beach are among those welcoming cruise ship workers on shore leave in this busy port city. The Canaveral Port Ministry provides food, transportation, mail service, prayers and other comforts from home. The Rev. Sharing faith at the state fair
JACKSON, Miss. — For the third year in a row, representatives from the Mississippi Conference’s office of faith community formation offered prayer and reminders of God’s goodness with fairgoers during the Mississippi State Fair. The outreach opportunity allowed people to share their faith stories, struggles and triumphs with volunteers including Bishop Sharma Lewis Logan. Matthew Johnson has the story.

US church supported future African bishop
YORKTOWN, Va. — The Rev. Keith Moore felt a nudge to help young João Sambo pursue his studies at Africa University, and the congregation of Providence United Methodist Church responded by raising enough money for his tuition. Sambo is now the bishop of the Mozambique-South Africa-Eswatini-Madagascar Episcopal Area. Tim Tanton has the story.

Sand Creek Massacre exhibit to open in DC
WASHINGTON — As part of the response of The United Methodist Church to the Sand Creek Massacre, the United Methodist Board of Church and Society and Commission on Religion and Race are hosting an exhibit that will be displayed at the United Methodist Building from Nov. 10 to Dec. 1. The massacre, on Nov. 29, 1864, caused the deaths of 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho people, most of them women, children and elders. Col. John Chivington, a Methodist minister, commanded the attack on the peaceful Native American encampment.

Miles named Outler Chair of Wesley Studies
DALLAS — The Rev. Rebekah Miles is the first woman to be named Albert C. Outler Chair of Wesley Studies at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. Miles also openly identifies as LGBTQ. Outler was a noted scholar of John Wesley’s works and famously formulated the Wesleyan Quadrilateral that Christians should consider Scripture, tradition, reason and experience as they live their faith.
