United Methodists among dead in Nigeria attack

LAU, Nigeria (UMNS) — A recent attack by herdsmen in Lau has left more than 55 people dead, including 38 United Methodists, according to the Rev. Irmiya Bako, superintendent of the Yugorobi district, where the incident took place. He said 3,700 United Methodists are currently displaced and need urgent help. The Rev. Ande I. Emmanuel reports.

Catalog of church plans helped spread Methodism

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMC.org) — Beginning in 1870, before Sears, Roebuck began offering low-cost plans for home construction, Methodists had a “church plans catalog” that made design of churches and parsonages affordable and helped add many a Methodist church to the U.S. landscape. UMC.org and the United Methodist Commission on Archives and History have done a video on the historic catalog.

Preventing substance abuse among Brazil's youth

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil — “Shade and Fresh Water,” a program founded by a United Methodist missionary and supported by the Methodist Church of Brazil and other faith communities, is an after-school ministry for at-risk youth. Reaching thousands of children and teens over the past decade, the program contributes to The United Methodist Church’s Abundant Health initiative. Bella DiFilippo reports.

Duke Divinity School 
Guatemala students certified in pastoral ministry

DURHAM, N.C. — Thirty-nine students in Guatemala received a Certificate in Methodist Pastoral Ministry through a Duke Divinity School program. The program was launched with the support of the United Methodist Boards of Global Ministries and Higher Education and Ministry and at the request of the Methodist church in Guatemala to help support Methodist Guatemalan pastors.
