Church leaders call for justice for Filipinos
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California-Nevada Conference Bishop Sandy Olewine and other United Methodists were among the protesters gathered June 4 at the California State Capitol to demand justice for Lyle Prijoles, a California native who was killed by the Philippines military in April. Prijoles was among 19 people killed in a military action that has raised alarms from religious leaders and international human rights groups. Philippines officials recently blocked the Rev. Sadie Stone, a California United Methodist pastor, from joining in a fact-finding mission about the deaths. Connor Mitchell and Nate Roque report.

ATLANTA — More than 470 scholarship recipients supported by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry earned degrees this spring across disciplines ranging from theology and education to finance and science. For many graduates, scholarships provided more than financial support — they were a lifeline that made education possible. Higher Education and Ministry staff have the story.

Prayers sought after death of bishop’s son
KINSHASA, Congo — The Council of Bishops is asking for prayers for Central Congo Area Bishop Daniel O. Lunge and his wife, Julianne Dembo, upon the death of their son, Papy Lunge. He died June 12 in Kinshasa at age 39 following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife and three children. United Methodists in the Central Congo Area also extend their condolences to the Lunge family.
