Active legacy: United Methodists at the UN

NEW YORK (UMNS) — When Elsa Stamatopoulou started her work at the United Nations in 1980, United Methodists were among the leading faith-based partners collaborating to create standards and monitoring tools for human rights issues. The Board of Church and Society visited the United Methodist-owned Church Center for the U.N. during its March 23-25 meeting in the New York area. Linda Bloom reports.

Jimmy Carr, 'champion of deacons,' dies at 72

LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. (UMNS) — The Rev. Jimmy Carr, who died March 17, dedicated his ministry to bridging The United Methodist Church and the world. He helped connect Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center with the broader community and worked to make Africa University a beacon of the Cross and Flame. He also helped put the Order of Deacons on the denomination’s map. Heather Hahn has the obituary.

Gwen White, bishop's spouse, dies

LAWRENCE, Mass. (UMNS) — Gwen White, the wife of retired Bishop C. Dale White and a longtime retreat and spiritual director, died March 27, according to an announcement from New England Area Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar. The Whites were married for 70 years. In 2015, Gwen White was honored with the Lifetime of Discipleship Award by the Preachers’ Aid Society of New England. Condolences may be sent to Bishop White, who is recovering from pneumonia, and the White family at 100 Newbury Court, Concord, MA 07142. 

Syrian refugees tell of flight from war

INDIANAPOLIS (UMNS) — Meridian Street United Methodist Church welcomed more than 250 Christians, Jews and Muslims to hear the stories of Syrian refugees and their flight from war, share a meal and welcome new neighbors to the community.

Speakers will include Gene Bedley, founder of the National Character Education Center. His topic is “Biblical Emphasis on Ethics and Character Development Through Scripture.” The seminar also will feature a Celebration of Music presentation. Cost is $35.

Conference: The 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation — 9 a.m. April 3 to 5 p.m. April 4, EDT. Candler School of Theology joins Emory University’s Center for the Study of Law and Religion in a scholarly celebration of the contributions of the Protestant Reformation to the transformation of theology, art, music, liturgy, church life, politics, economics and the law. The celebration will include a Bach organ concert by Emory University organist Timothy Albrecht and a presentation on Reformation archives by Pitts Theology Library’s M. Patrick Graham. Free.
