Understanding the Easter season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For Christians, Easter is not just one day; it’s a season of 50 days. Its length is derived from the 50 days between Passover and Pentecost in Judaism. The Easter season is more than an extended celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. It’s a time for focusing on the core doctrines and mysteries of the faith and preparing for the ministries the Spirit has empowered Christians to undertake in Jesus’ name, writes Ask The UMC.

Michigan Conference
Haiti support continues during hard times

LANSING, Mich. — Contributions from the Michigan Conference and a grant from the United Methodist Committee on Relief continue to help the embattled people of Haiti. The nation has suffered through the assassination of its president, an earthquake and a tropical storm in the past year. Haitian Assets for Peace International, which is supported by the conference, lost computer hardware and cash reserves in a fire. Kay DeMoss has the story.

North Texas Conference
‘Fish fry concept’ helps rural church grow

BOGATA, Texas — The Rev. John Purviance credits “the fish fry concept” for the growth of Cuthand United Methodist Church, which has about 300 members. Purviance has cultivated a family-friendly, bluegrass-gospel music culture infused with the Holy Spirit. The church celebrated 11 baptisms and that same number of new professions of faith in 2021.

WASHINGTON — The Howard University Wesley Foundation recently held its first retreat since the pandemic’s onset, and the University of Maryland campus ministry recently joined in the university’s involvement fair. UMCOR collaborating to relieve suffering of Ukrainians

ATLANTA — The United Methodist Committee on Relief along with Ohio Health and a Texas-based humanitarian organization focused on Ukraine are collaborating to send 47,895 pounds of medical supplies and equipment worth $935,000 to three hospitals in Kyiv, Ukraine. The first two of three shipments have been delivered. “UMCOR is pleased to facilitate both the procurement and the transportation of essential medical supplies to war-torn Ukraine,” said Roland Fernandes, top staff executive of UMCOR and its parent organization, Global Ministries. “We multiply our own efforts and the generosity of our contributors when we engage in creative service partnerships.”

Council of Bishops 
Bishops gather to chart future of denomination
 
WASHINGTON — In the wake of disruptions and postponements due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the more than 100 bishops of The United Methodist Church will meet virtually April 25-29 to discuss the future course of the denomination. The spring meeting of the Council of Bishops will also welcome a new slate of leaders, including the new council president, Bishop Thomas Bickerton of the New York Area. The April 25 and 29 meetings will be livestreamed to the public on the bishops’ Facebook page beginning at 9 a.m. U.S. Eastern time.
