Silent protest

During the Tuesday afternoon session about two dozen protesters walked silently up and down the General Conference hall, outside the boundary around the delegate seating, with signs protesting current United Methodist Church policies dealing with LGBT issues.

Rev. Sue Laurie held a sign reading “Lesbian Pastor.” Other signs read “Is there grace for me?” and “I am gay by God’s grace.”

Previous General Conferences have been interrupted by organized protests that have disrupted the work of the delegates. The work of the General Conference, which at the time was honoring the United Methodist Church’s pan-Methodist brothers and sisters, continued during Tuesday’s protest. The song being sung, “No Walls,” seemed very appropriate for both issues.
