GC2012 End-of-Day Prayer Meetup, April 24

Every day at General Conference, United Methodist Women is organizing end-of-day prayer gatherings for all–delegates, agency and conference staff, clergy, laity and visitors alike–to center themselves amidst the hectic schedules and grueling meetings required to do the work of the church.

Yesterday, our first meeting took place immediately following the (late) conclusion of the first plenary, by the column in front of the West Hall (which will be the regular prayer spot from now on!). We read from The Book of Uncommon Prayer, and here it is for you to reflect on:

The sun has set, God. And the darkness that descends at nighttime makes the world smaller. We become less aware of things far away from us, and we become more aware of things close to us. We see our friends’ faces. We see the light in the eyes of our loved ones. We feel the presence of the Holy Spirit moving through this circle. Help us stop worrying for now. Help us put it aside in the dark and leave it alone. The music surrounds us like your loving arms. Hold us close. Let us feel your warm reassuring hand on our shoulders and tell us it’s going to be okay. Thank you for this day, God. Thank you for the new day we will open our eyes to in the morning. Amen.

After a long first day of orientations, briefings, luncheons, worship, and an extended first plenary, these words seem appropriate for seeking guidance, reassurance and community as we begin the arduous legislative work of the church. What do you think of this prayer? Does it help you prepare for the tasks ahead as a delegate, volunteer, observer, or communicator?

Join us daily, 5 minutes following the close of each evening worship by the West Hall! Whether you attend or not, we will continue to share these prayers on this blog.
