Arkansas tries new job seeker, employer plan

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS) - United Methodists in Arkansas are engaging in denominational matchmaking to pair potential employers with graduates of a job-training program for those recovering from addiction. A side benefit from a successful marriage: a model that others could replicate across the denomination.

From Haiti to Louisiana in Isaac's wake

GRETNA, La. (UMNS) - The Rev. Tim Smith and a Volunteer in Mission team from the Louisiana Annual (regional) Conference are back home safe after first aving Isaac's wrath in Haiti on a mission trip. h's church in Gretna, La., was not so lucky. However, the storm has not diminished the team's passion for the church's work in Haiti.

UMCOR's Isaac response in high gear

JACKSON, Miss. (UMNS) - The United Methodist Committee on Relief, the denomination's relief agency, has sent $10,000 emergency grants to both the Mississippi and the Louisiana conferences, and church leaders involved in the response reported that giving cash donations, rather than material goods, is the best way to help those affected by the hurricane.

Assessment team visits Isaac-affected area

KILLIAN, La. (UMNS) - On Labor Day, the Rev. Milton Bourque, pastor of Huff Chapel United Methodist Church, guided a damage assessment team from the Louisiana Annual Conference through some of the hardest-hit areas in a southern Louisiana parish. Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey, former head of UMCOR, is part of the team.

Connectional Table executive resigns

PLANO, Texas (UMNS) - Bishop John L. Hopkins announced Sept. 4 that Mary Brooke Casad has submitted her resignation as the executive secretary of The United Methodist Church's Connectional Table, which coordinates the mission, ministry and resources of the denomination. Casad has provided administrative leadership to the Connectional Table since 2007.

United Methodist Paralympian takes gold

LONDON (UMNS) - On Sept. 3, United Methodist wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden of Clarksville, Md., won her first Paralympic Games gold medal in the 400M with a personal best time of 52.97. "I (have) no words to describe this feeling," she wrote on Facebook. "Thank you for all of your wonderful support. I am truly blessed." She previously has taken four silver and two bronze medals from the games in Athens, Greece, and Beijing.

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (UMNS) - Olympic gold medalist swimmer Claire Donahue returned to Central United Methodist Church on Aug. 26 to participate in her pastor's sermon and give church members a gander at her trophy.
