Expanding the local-global connection in advocacy
NEW YORK (UMNS) - In 2006, when there were 207 political or "extrajudicial" killings in the Philippines, it was clear that international pressure was needed to hold the Philippines government accountable. United Methodists and other church members in the Philippines shared information with their connections abroad and invited delegations from outside the country to hear the stories from the grassroots. That's one example of "glocal" advocacy.

What it means to perform 'exemplary deeds of service'
WASHINGTON (UMNS) - The Rev. Gilbert H. Caldwell and his wife recently attended the ceremony where President Obama honored 18 citizens with a Presidential Citizens Medal. Among those honored were the six adults who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the founder of Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. In a commentary, Caldwell reflects not only on those honored, but also on the slaves who built the White House where the ceremony was held.
