Michigan Area pushes Haitian relief

LANSING, Mich. (UMNS) — The Michigan Area Haiti Task force and Bishop David Bard are asking for generous contributions to relief efforts in Haiti after Hurricane Matthew devastated the country’s southwestern section. The task force has formed a sub-committee to consider other ways to help. Kay DeMoss has the story.

Turning food waste into healthy meals

WASHINGTON (UMC.org) — Members of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church prevent carloads of fresh meat and vegetables from ending up in a landfill. They have joined an effort to turn food waste into healthy meals for the hungry.

Commentary: 2 weeks at Dakota pipeline protests

SAN FRANCISCO (UMNS) — Kim Bender, director of individual giving for Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, recently spent two weeks with the Standing Rock Sioux in North Dakota, protesting a four-state oil pipeline that opponents say would disturb sacred sites and pollute drinking water. “It feels really important and something that everyone should be aware of,” she writes.

Milford elected head of Publishing House

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — The United Methodist Publishing House board unanimously confirmed the election of the Rev. Brian K. Milford as the agency's new president and chief executive officer. Neil M. Alexander, who has served as president and publisher for 20 years, plans to retire by the end of 2016.

An item in the Oct. 12 digest about an exhibit at Candler School of Theology in celebration of the Reformation’s 500th anniversary incorrectly implied the exhibit will be next year. The exhibit of Martin Luther-related items at Pitts Theology Library opened Oct. 11, 2016, and continues through Jan. 16, 2017.

Deadline to register for annual Women’s Forum: Sara Miles on "Breaking Bread with a Broken World" on Thursday, Nov. 3 — The Women, Theology and Ministry program at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology will present Sara Miles, writer and founder/director of The Food Pantry at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco. The event will be at Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1660 Decatur Road, Atlanta. Free, but registration required. Details
