North Georgia Conference
United Methodist chaplain makes history

ATLANTA — Capt. Jennifer Bowden, a U.S. Navy chaplain and clergy member of the North Georgia Conference, has been selected as the 13th chaplain of the U.S. Coast Guard. When she assumes duty this month, she will be the first woman and first United Methodist to hold the position. Sybil Davidson has a short story.

Episcopal bishops support full-communion goal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Episcopal Church’s bishops, meeting during the denomination’s General Convention, approved a resolution that is the next step toward full communion between Episcopalians and United Methodists. United Methodist Bishop Gregory V. Palmer told those gathered that this movement toward full communion is “a sign for what God intends for all of us.” Melodie Woerman reports.

Immigration Law & Justice Network
Immigration ministry applauds Biden executive order

ANNANDALE, Va. — Immigration Law & Justice Network, the immigration ministry of The United Methodist Church, has come out in support of a June 18 executive order from President Joe Biden that will protect certain undocumented immigrant spouses and children of U.S. citizens from being removed from the U.S. and will streamline a waiver process for many people covered under the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program to access employment visas. The statement urges the president to extend opportunities for a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

LAKELAND, Fla. — In the two weeks between Juneteenth (Freedom Day) and the Fourth of July (Independence Day), Florida Conference Bishop Tom Berlin is encouraging U.S. United Methodists to read four foundational texts in U.S. history: The Constitution, Washington’s Farewell Address, Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address and Frederick Douglass’ speech titled “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.”
