UM News Funding

The Book of Discipline says of UM News, a part of United Methodist Communications:

“It shall be the official newsgathering and distributing agency for The United Methodist Church and its general agencies. In discharging its responsibilities, in keeping with the historic freedom of the press, it shall operate with editorial freedom as an independent news bureau serving all segments of church life and society, making available to both religious and public news media information concerning the Church at large.”

Financial support comes from the denomination’s World Service Fund, through which church giving supports the work of agencies including United Methodist Communications. UM News also receives revenue from advertisers whose work aligns with United Methodist Social Principles.

United Methodist Communications and other church agencies are annually audited to ensure they use church giving as designated.
